'Emas Bluse was created in 1961, the year that Gerhard Richter fled from the German Democratic Republic and relocated to Düsseldorf. A significant turning point in the artist's career, the work marked Richter’s abandonment of the Socialist Realist style officially sanctioned by the former GDR. Immediately upon arrival in the German Federal Republic, Richter confronted and absorbed Abstract Expressionism.“Emas Bluse” marks a transition toward the artist’s eventual (and signature) destination of photo-based painting.'

S, K: Why doesn't the Felt Suit have buttons?

Beuys: Well, that was dictated by the character of felt. That occurred quite naturally. It was tailored after my own suit and I think the whole thing has to retain the character of felt, in the sense that felt doesn't strive to be smart, so to speak. One has to conserve the character, omit mere trifles, such as complicated buttons, button­holes and so on, and if somebody wants to wear the suit, he can fasten it with safety­pins.

S, K: How should one take care of the Felt Suit?

Com mais de 2000 anos de história, o hanbok sofreu poucas alterações. Até 600d.c., os homens usavam jeogori (jaqueta), baji (calças) e durumagi (sobretudo), chapéu, cinto e sapatos. As mulheres usavam jeogori (uma jaqueta curta) com duas fitas compridas que eram atadas para formar um otgoreum (nó), uma saia longa e volumosa, atada em redor de uma cintura alta, chamada tchima, um durumagi com beoseon (meias de algodão branco) e sapatos em forma de canoa. Mesmo em situações de maior formalidade, o traje tem um desenho simples, muitas cores e é feito de modo a adaptar-se às formas e movimentos de quem usa, por isso é conhecido como “traje do vento”. “Jung descreve as características da serpente, que fizeram dela um símbolo natural, autónomo e profundamente enraizado na psique humana, nos seguintes termos: Ela surge espontaneamente ou é descoberta de surpresa; fascina; tem o olhar fixo e não ligado àquilo que fita; o seu sangue é frio e não conhece o homem; desliza sobre aquele que dorme; é encontrada no sapato desatado ou na algibeira. Exprime, assim, o medo de tudo o que é inumano e, ao mesmo tempo, o “temor reverencial” perante o ser superior, alheio à esfera dos homens. É o que há de mais baixo, o diabo, e o que há de mais elevado, o Filho de Deus, o Lógos, o Noûs, o Agathodaimon. A presença da serpente é assustadora, aparece nos lugares mais inesperados.
